COMMSOFT TAKES HOME ALBANY-COLONIE CHAMBER HONORS

Robin Wood

When Larry Davis, president, CEO and chairman of Albany-based CommSoft hadn't heard from the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce before Thursday's annual business awards dinner, he figured the company hadn't won an award and he didn't write an acceptance speech.

Like many a surprised actor, he gave a speech off the top of his head when CommSoft—which makes billing software for the telecommunications industry—was awarded the Barry L. Gold Memorial Small Business of the Year Award.

The chamber kept most of the award winners under wraps so that they could be announced Academy Awards-style to an audience of more than 300 at the dinner.

David Allen Snyder Sr., chief executive officer of Troy-based Walter Snyder Printer Inc., was presented with the chamber's Lifetime Achievement Award.

VersaTrans Solutions Inc. of Latham, which provides software and consulting for schools, won the Tech Valley Tomorrow Award, recognizing the region's high-tech businesses.

Latham-based salon Rumors Ltd. won the Entrepreneurial Excellence Award.

Jeanne A. Benas Art Studio of Latham won the Micro-enterprise Award, recognizing companies with fewer than four employees.

Capital Communications Federal Credit Union of Albany took home the Community Service Award.

And Mohawk Innovative Technology Inc. of Albany, N.Y., which develops oil-free engines and machines, won the Innovative Enterprise Award.

“This year's honorees are superior examples of excellence in the small-business community. They have demonstrated perseverance, leadership, significant growth and service to their communities,” said Alan Rosenberg, chair of the Small Business Council, in a release.
